Mahashivratri 2022 in India takes place in the month of February, and it’s one of the biggest festivals in Hinduism.


When is Mahashivratri?

Mahashivratri falls on March  1st, 2022. It is important to note that there are two different festivals that celebrate Mahashivratri: one in Nepal and one in India. The former is a 16-day celebration that focuses on meditation, whereas the latter lasts only three days and is an elaborate celebration involving fireworks and dancing. The festival can be traced back to 500 B.C., with roots firmly planted in Hindu mythology.

How the name Mahashivaratri came into existence

If Shivaratri falls on a Tuesday, it is known as Shiva-Ratri or Shiv-Raj-Ratri. Similarly, if Shivaratri falls on a Saturday, it is called Shakti-Ratri. If Shivaratri falls on a Sunday, Monday or Wednesday then it is celebrated as 'Bhadra' Shivaratri.
